This week on the blog, we are counting down to the release of Ask a Medium (starring me, Erin English) on the Hello Ghostie podcast and also, Halloween!
If you want to check out the Hello Ghostie podcast, you can find it on Apple podcasts, or Spotify. Of course, be sure you don’t miss the episode, dropping October 27.

I’m Awake. It’s 3:00am
Do you often wake up right around 3am? If so, it’s probably not a coincidence. This hour has been dubbed the witching hour. Between the hours of 3 and 4am, the veil between the spirit world and the human world is the thinnest – but why?
I’ve spent many hours contemplating this.
- Isn’t it always 3am somewhere in the world?
- How is it thinnest?
- What does this mean in different time zones?
Nevertheless, I’m often awakened at this hour. It’s a real thing, and it follows daylight savings time, and different time zones. I have a few theories.
- Most people are sleeping during this time and are the most open and susceptible to suggestion, being in a dream state. Much of the population in your area has probably been asleep for multiple hours and are coming up from a deep sleep to a lighter, more consistent sleep. This is prime time for any spirit to connect, as it’s when each of us are more likely to remember messages and dreams.
- The darkness creates a greater silence. It’s not as noisy and we aren’t as distracted, so we hear and catch on to unusual activity quicker. Think about your house during the day versus in the evening when it’s dark. If the same types of activities were going on, we may not hear it or notice it during the day.
- The veil is thinner. I can imagine this like an infinity symbol tied to the sun and moon phases each day. Between those is an ebb and flow bringing the spirit world closer and further through the cycle.
This is what I can come up with, but I would love to hear your theories if you have them.
Don’t Fear the Messenger
Unless you have a haunted house, if you’re being awakened at 3am, it’s likely because someone you know may be trying to connect with you. Unless you’re a medium, it’s also unlikely that a passing spirit is going to come bug you just for fun, so take a deep breath.
- Focus on remaining calm
- Ask the spirit to leave if you’re uncomfortable. You can do this in your mind, or out loud (up to you)
- Ask for a sign if you want to confirm it’s someone you know
- Remember, you are in charge. This is your space, your life, your house and can create the rules of engagement
